House Move and Oversized Equipment Transport

What You'll Need

A permit may be required to move a home or oversized equipment through Raleigh's jurisdiction if the item meets any of the following requirements per NCDOT:

  • Total width is over eight feet, six inches.
  • Overall height is greater than thirteen feet, six inches.
  • A single vehicle is over 40 feet or vehicle combination is over 60 feet in length.

    (Exception: truck tractor/48-foot semi-trailer combination with no overall length limitation is allowed on all roads and truck tractor/53-foot semi-trailer combination, with no overall length limitation is allowed on all North Carolina primary (North Carolina, U.S., interstate) routes unless restricted.)
  • Weight exceeds legal weight by North Carolina law.

What You'll Need

Your application for this type of project must be reviewed by the Raleigh Police Department, Raleigh Parking (if parking spaces are affected), and the Traffic Signal Supervisor prior to the move. City of Raleigh Traffic personnel may have to adjust the height of traffic signals and travel with the transport during the move.

To submit for a House/Heavy Equipment Move permit please apply via Permit Portal. All application forms and supporting documents must be attached as PDF's.

  • House Move Permit Application
    • The application must be filled out completely and approved/signed by the Raleigh Department of Transportation, Raleigh Police Department, and Raleigh Parking (if parking spaces are affected) before submittal for permits.
    • A map of the route.
  • Approved NCDOT permit for oversize/overweight equipment.
  • NCDOT approved permit for the route (if on DOT street).
  • Required to get City of Raleigh approval for our streets (look at permit).
