Spring Fishing Activities at Lake Wheeler

Have you wanted to get into fishing but are unsure where to start? 

Starting at Lake Wheeler will get you going on the right foot for the season. Stop by the park office and learn about the Rod and Reel Tackle Loaner program where you can borrow a pole for fishing. Bait is not included. Additionally, check out the following classes to be held at Lake Wheeler Park:

Fishing Workshops with NCWRC

  • Introductory Fishing Workshop: Feb. 22, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
    Join our comprehensive Introductory Fishing Workshop designed to equip you with the essential skills and knowledge for a successful start in fishing. NCWRC instructors will guide you through a variety of topics, ensuring you feel confident and prepared for your fishing adventures. 
  • Catfishing Basics: March 22, 9 a.m. – noon.
    Interested in targeting one of the best-tasting and largest-growing fish in North Carolina? This workshop is designed to teach the basics of targeting catfish in the coastal rivers and reservoirs across the state. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to sharpen your fishing skills, this class is perfect for you!

Location: Lake Wheeler Park
Dates: Saturday, Feb. 22 and March 22
Ages: 12 years and older with an adult
Cost: Free

Intro to Fishing Classes

Experienced Park staff show you the ins and outs of bank fishing at the pond at Lake Wheeler. Supplies are provided but you are welcome to bring your own.

  • Family Class: March 1,  8:30 - 11:30 a.m.
    Ages 10 and older with an adult
  • Adult Class: April 5, 8:30 - 11:30 a.m.
    Ages: 18 and older.
