Restoring North Carolina's Historic Peavine Prairies presented by Bryan England

Many historic sources described the Carolina Piedmont region as having once been covered by "vast prairies, with pea-vine grass." Then they described how this same "peavine" ecosystem "utterly disappeared" following European settlement. What was this "pea-vine" ecosystem seen by early settlers? Why did it collapse so quickly? And can we resurrect this lost "peavine" ecology in North Carolina today?
