Bringing Real Engineering Into Your Classroom!

Design it. Build it. Experience it.

Students get a behind-the-scenes look at how Raleigh plans, designs, and builds safer streets. Our team delivers interactive, hands-on experiences that connect classroom learning to real transportation projects across the city.

What Students Experience

This program gives students a hands-on look at how engineers design, plan, and build the roads and infrastructure that keep Raleigh moving. Students will explore:

  • The engineering design process — how ideas turn into real-world roadway projects.
  • Problem-solving in public infrastructure — why safe, functional streets matter to communities.
  • Raleigh’s Complete Streets approach — designing for cars, bikes, and pedestrians alike.
  • Engineering careers and pathways — the skills and tools that engineers use every day.

Core Learning Topics

Complete Streets

Students explore how we design roadways for everyone: drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users. Through interactive activities using Streetmix, students build their own street designs and see how each element improves safety and accessibility.

Life Cycle of a Roadway Project

Students follow a project from early planning through design and construction. They see how ideas become real projects through public input, engineering, and construction.

Bike and Pedestrian Connectivity

Students discover how sidewalks, greenways, bike lanes, and crossings connect people to everyday destinations like schools, parks, and neighborhoods. Students explore how these connections make it easier and safer to get around Raleigh without a car.

What We Bring To You

We bring the experience directly to your classroom or event:

  • Classroom presentations
  • STEM nights and career fairs
  • Interactive workshops
  • Engineering and design activities

We work with you to tailor each experience to your goals, schedule, and students.

See It In Action

Career Fair - Millbrook Magnet Elementary (2026)

Raleigh Roadway Design & Construction collaborated with Raleigh Stormwater at the Environmental Connections Career Fair to illustrate how green stormwater infrastructure and roadway construction work together to build a safe Raleigh.

Classroom Presentation - Hilburn Academy (2025)

Students designed streets using Streetmix, balancing safety, comfort, and sustainability to create streets that serve everyone.

Career Day - Hilburn Academy (2025)

Students explored the life cycle of a roadway project with our Roadway Design & Construction team, learning about planning, design, construction, and community engagement.

Career Day - Poe Elementary School (2024)

We introduced students to the basics of roadway construction and gave them a glimpse into the importance of careers in engineering and construction.
