Who We Are
Our education program invites students to think like engineers by exploring roadway design and construction through hands-on, interactive activities. Students follow projects from early design concepts to completed roads, discovering how Raleigh plans and builds infrastructure that keeps our community moving safely.
About the Program
This program gives students a hands-on look at how engineers design, plan, and build the roads and infrastructure that keep Raleigh moving. Students will explore:
- The engineering design process — how ideas turn into real-world roadway projects.
- Problem-solving in public infrastructure — why safe, functional streets matter to communities.
- Raleigh’s Complete Streets approach — designing for cars, bikes, and pedestrians alike.
- Engineering careers and pathways — the skills and tools that engineers use every day.
What We Offer
Our team brings hands-on engineering experiences directly to your students, tailored for each grade level:
- Elementary School – Spark curiosity with interactive activities that explore traffic safety, basic infrastructure, and fun engineering challenges.
- Middle School – Engage in design simulations and problem-solving exercises that show how planning, teamwork, and safety shape real-world projects.
- High School – Apply STEM skills in career-focused workshops that connect classroom learning to actual transportation design, engineering challenges, and professional pathways
We're available to participate in STEM fairs and career days, give classroom presentations, and lead engaging workshops.
Career Fair - Millbrook Magnet Elementary (2026)
Raleigh Roadway Design & Construction collaborated with Raleigh Stormwater at the Environmental Connections Career Fair to illustrate how green stormwater infrastructure and roadway construction work together to build a safe Raleigh.
Classroom Presentation - Hilburn Academy (2025)
Students designed streets using Streetmix, balancing safety, comfort, and sustainability to create streets that serve everyone.
Career Day - Hilburn Academy (2025)
Students explored the life cycle of a roadway project with our Roadway Design & Construction team, learning about planning, design, construction, and community engagement.
