Pollinator Protection Projects

Pollinators and pollinator habitats help sustain our food system and our ecosystem. One out of every three bites of food we eat is made possible by pollinators like bees, birds, and butterflies. Protecting pollinator species and habitat is essential to a sustainable food system and to addressing climate change.

Pollinators also protect our natural plant and animal life and support overall ecosystem health. The city supports pollinator habitats through grants and community partnerships. We are committed to raising awareness of bees and other pollinators' essential role in the complex food web and providing safe habitats for these vital species.

City of Raleigh Pollinator Projects

Many City of Raleigh departments support pollinators through programs, habitat installation and events.  

• The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department has several programs  
  • Wildlife and Pollinator program shares information and resources about pollinator protection and pollinator habitats in City of Raleigh Parks. 
  • The Monarch Waystation Program supports migrating monarch butterflies.
  • The Invasive Species program engages volunteers to remove non-native species from our City parks and other properties to allow native plants to thrive and support pollinator species. 
• The Housing and Neighborhoods Department provides Neighborhood Funds to encourage neighborhood enhancement projects. There are two levels of these grants which range in amount from $250 up to $1,000 for a variety of projects including pollinator habitat, community gardens, urban agriculture, and tree planting.
• The Stormwater Management Division offers resources for planting rain gardens. These installations help to improve water quality, reduce runoff from impervious surfaces, and attract pollinator species! 

The City also provides pollinator habitat at key city sites. Visit them today, but keep a respectful distance from our busy bees (and other pollinators)!
