Award announced
The City of Raleigh’s Information Technology Department Using Microclimate Modeling and Digital Twin to envision Raleigh's Future Project recently won a Smart Cities of North America award (SCNAA) from IDC Government Insights. Raleigh won the award for its “Using Microclimate Modeling and Digital Twin to Envision Raleigh’s Future” project in the Urban Planning and Land User category.
The Smart Cities of America awards are designed to recognize the progress North American states and municipalities make in executing smart cities projects. They also provide a forum for sharing best practices to help accelerate smart city development in the continent. Winners will be honored at Smart Cities Connect conference on May 7-10, held in Raleigh.
Winners in the SCNAA illustrate best practice examples of how forward-thinking municipalities are effectively leveraging technology and innovation to offer sustainable, new services and economic opportunities to meet the needs and expectations of diverse communities.
“We recognize the multitude of impressive projects showcased by our colleagues in other communities and are pleased to have been named an award recipient this year,” said City of Raleigh CIO Mark Wittenburg. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication and inventive nature of our team and partners, whose collaborative efforts have focused on assessing the environmental issues of present-day decisions through predictive modeling."
Raleigh’s IT department partnered with Sustainability, Planning, Office of Strategy and Innovation and external partner MITRE on the project. They explored the use of technology in solving current challenges using microclimate modeling and Digital Twin to envision Raleigh's future. The microclimate data applied to a 3D digital twin allowed the team to explore an innovative technology to address the mounting complexities of urban life and climate change. This innovative solution can guide more intelligent and resilient urban development.
