What types of paper can and cannot be recycled

Accepted 

The City of Raleigh accepts many paper products for recycling. See if your item is on the list below.

  • Paper: junk mail, envelopes (including window envelopes), copy and fax paper, printed or blank; remove any paper clips; staples do not need to be removed
  • Aseptic boxes: used for wine, milk, soup, and juice boxes (remove any straw and flatten it before placing in the recycling container)
  • Paperboard cans: lightly rinse and remove and discard caps
  • Gable top cartons: milk, juice, and laundry detergent cartons
  • Newspapers, magazines, catalogs, and paperback books: remove all inserts
  • Paperboard boxes and tubes: paperboard and chipboard include cereal, pasta, toothpaste and beer boxes, as well as paper towel, toilet paper, and wrapping paper tubes

Not Accepted 

  • Cups, napkins, plates and ice cream cartons
  • Pizza boxes
  • Hardcover books 
  • Egg cartons (lowest grade of paperboard) 
  • Boxes with wax coatings 
  • Checkbooks, carbon paper, and/or paper with adhesive backing
  • Shredded paper

Prepare Your Items

Papers should be removed from plastic bags or sleeves. Recycle the plastic bags at your local grocery store.

Remove any linings (like in cereal boxes) or attached paper (like toilet paper on tubes), and flatten the boxes
