Mayor's Statement on Greenway Shooting Situation

Media Briefing

Mayor Baldwin:

This is a sad and tragic day in City of Raleigh.

Just over 5 pm today, multiple people were shot on Neuse River Greenway near Hedingham subdivision. This is an active investigation.

At this time, RPD has confirmed five fatalities. One of them was an off-duty Raleigh police officer.

Two others were also transported to the hospital. One is a Raleigh police K-9 officer, he did not have life-threatening injuries.

About 8 o’clock, Raleigh police reported that they had a suspect contained in a residence in the area.

Raleigh police are being assisted by numerous local and state law enforcement agencies. I would like thank Governor Cooper for his swift action and support.

We sincerely thank all of them for their service.

All of us in Raleigh now need to come together.

We need to support those in our community who have suffered a terrible loss.

We need to support the family of the police officer who was killed.

The Raleigh Police Department has lost one of it’s own.

And we need to thank the extraordinary officers of the Raleigh Police Department who even now are protecting us and putting themselves in harm’s way to arrest the suspect.

We need to reach out to all who are hurting.

We will need to be there for them for a long time

And we must do more.

We must stop this mindless violence in America.

We must address gun violence.

We must address mental health issues.

We have much to do. Tonight, we have much to mourn. Yet, we have much work to do.

We will be back to report to you again later.

May God bless you all and may God bless our city.
