Complete

Phase One

  • Included stormwater improvements along Swann Street and Varnell Avenue.
  • Completed in December 2019.

Phase Two

  • Crews repaired the streambank at a property on Swann Street. The property eroded from heavy rain after phase one construction. Walls along the channel help protect the property too.

  • Debris was also collecting at nearby culverts on another property. This caused unexpected flooding, erosion, and maintenance challenges at both properties. To help with this, we replaced the culverts with one larger culvert. This will help alleviate the blockages that are taking place in the stormwater system. This work was complete in August 2021. Crews completed final fence and curb gutter work. There is one final item that needs to be addressed.

Phase One: A concrete culvert that carries stormwater along Swann Street.

Phase One: The updated stormwater system along Swann Street.

Phase One: Stormwater channel flowing under a driveway on Swann Street. The riprap (rock) along the channel helps stabilize the system.

Schedule

Date Activity
Fall 2017 Project design complete
Summer 2017 Drainage easements and environmental permit process complete
Winter 2018 Project bid complete
Summer 2018 Project construction begins (Phase One)
December 2019 Project construction complete (Phase One)
Late Fall 2019 Project design underway (Phase Two)
Fall 2020 Project construction begins (Phase Two)
Summer 2021 Project construction complete (Phase Two)

Phases

One

  • Reduce flooding along Swann Street;
  • Increase the size of the stormwater pipes along the street (48 to 72 inches in diameter); and,
  • Add storm drains to Swann Street to capture water from yards and streets.

Two

We're making stormwater improvements at two properties on Swann Street. The stream that runs through these properties is unstable and causes safety concerns to residents and their homes.

History

We completed a drainage basin study in 2013 for the Swann Street area. Recommendations included reducing the frequency of flooding, road and driveway overtopping, and completing bank erosion stabilization.  Raleigh City Council approved the design for the first phase in July 2015.
