History

This improvement project will eliminate Sanitary Sewer Overflows associated with wet weather overflows and prevent sewage from damaging the nearby streams and wetlands.

A preliminary engineering study was completed in 2017 with preliminary and final design following and completed in Spring 2019.

The project was initially identified as part of the 2014 Sanitary Sewer Capacity Study. The study identified the wet weather capacity shortfalls as well as a history of observed Sanitary Sewer Overflows. Sanitary Sewer Overflows are a violation of the City of Raleigh’s permits and create potential environmental hazards. The study stated that backup from the limited capacity in sections of lower slopes causes the model to predict overflows and that the risk of overflows means the project should be critical due to potential impact on health and safety.
