Raleigh Parks and ACC Collaborate to Enhance Lake Wheeler Park's Rowing Community

Raleigh Parks is teaming up with the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance (GRSA), Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), to bring some upgrades to Lake Wheeler Park's rowing scene.

For years, Lake Wheeler has been a hub for local rowing action, hosting individual, youth, adult, and club rowing.  On a collegiate level, events have included the Lake Wheeler Invitational. What started as a local affair has gradually gained momentum, drawing national attention. In 2023 Lake Wheeler hosted the eighteen (18) team invitational with teams coming from as far as Washington State.  Later that season we hosted our first Atlantic Coast Conference Championship.  These events had a combined economic impact of $1 million.

We are thrilled to announce an eight-year agreement to elevate Lake Wheeler Park's status as a premier rowing destination. This will allow us to host high-quality events that'll thrill the local rowing community, athletes, colleges, and spectators alike. And it's not just about the sport – we're also aiming to broaden rowing's appeal, both locally and nationally.

What's on the agenda? The Lake Wheeler Invitational will occur annually and ACC Championships six times over the term of the agreement, offering a steady stream of rowing excitement. With each partner investing in these events, we're laying the groundwork for an unforgettable experience.

So, prepare to witness a transformation as Lake Wheeler Park gears up to become a must-visit spot for rowing enthusiasts. This partnership isn't just about collaboration – it's about setting the stage for a brighter, more vibrant future for rowing.
