Portions of Glenwood Avenue and Johnson Street now have zones where passengers can be picked up or dropped off more safely at night.
“These new zones promote safer behavior for pedestrians, getting them off the roads and making it unnecessary for them to cross travel lanes,” said Senior Transportation Analyst Seneca Miller. “Evening passenger loading zones will make it faster, easier and accessible for riders and drivers. Since these are set areas, riders and drivers will know exactly where to pick up or drop off for more efficient turnover and more passengers can use the curb space to access their ride.”
The City Council recently approved a Raleigh Parking proposal to install new evening passenger loading zones along the 500 block of Glenwood Avenue and the 500 and 600 blocks of Johnson Street.
What to expect?
- Riders and drivers will be able to easily identify the black and white passenger loading zones signs along Glenwood Avenue and Johnson Street.
- Evening passenger loading zones hours are from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., Friday through Sunday.
- Time limit is 10 minutes for quick pick-up and drop-off of passengers.
The new passenger loading zones are being installed to address Raleigh Police Department’s concerns of congestion along the downtown Glenwood Avenue travel lanes on weekends and the influx of rideshare and taxi passenger loading and unloading.
The new zones will be available for use starting Friday, July 23.
Raleigh Parking ambassadors will be on street to educate riders and drivers and answer questions.
