We have approved new regulations that limit development in the floodplain. The floodplain is the area next to a creek or river that floods. Having less development in the floodplain will help preserve 1,545 acres of land. This means that open, green space near a creek will allow water to flow in the floodplain without impacting buildings on a property and putting people at risk when it rains.
The change in regulation will directly impact about 400 properties in the floodplain that aren't developed. Developed properties and properties that are 0.5 acres or less are exempt from the new regulations.
The regulations will go into effect in April 2022 after new federal floodplain maps are released.

- Severity of flooding. Flooding is not as bad when water has more room to flow and soak into the ground.
- Chances of property damage from floodwater since structures will not be in the floodplain.
- Instances of emergency rescue since fewer people will be in harm’s way.
