Celebrate Lunar New Year with fun activities from Raleigh Parks!
What is Lunar New Year?
Lunar New Year is typically celebrated in many Asian countries annually. It begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar and ends on the first full moon of the lunar calendar, 15 days later. The lunar calendar is based on the cycles of the moon, so the dates of the holiday vary from year to year, beginning between January 21 and February 20 according to Western calendars.
Ten days before the beginning of the new lunar year, houses are cleaned thoroughly to remove any bad luck that might be inside, a custom called “sweeping of the grounds.” Traditionally, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are designated for family celebrations, including religious ceremonies that honor ancestors. Family members may also receive red envelopes containing small amounts of money. Dances and fireworks are common throughout the holiday period and the Lantern Festival concludes the New Year’s celebrations. Source
