Raleigh Fire Department Welcomes 27 New Members

The Raleigh Fire Department family has officially grown larger. Twenty-seven new recruits graduated from the Fire Academy Wednesday, Jan. 6. As you can imagine, the 45th Fire Academy took on a different look and feel due to the pandemic.

Every year, hundreds of men and women apply to the Raleigh Fire Academy. It is a highly competitive and rigorous process. This year, the academy was condensed from 32 weeks to 27 weeks because of the pandemic. The academy, which is held at the Keeter Training Center, includes both intense physical training and a challenging academic program.

Due to the pandemic, the Raleigh Fire Department held the graduation ceremony outside for the first time. And there was an empty chair for instructor Lt. Herman Ellis who died in an off-duty crash earlier this month.

“It has definitely been a challenge,” said Captain Ben Averette. “Fortunately, we were able to safely navigate COVID and that is a testament to the hard work of the recruits.”

Congratulations to the new firefighters!
