A number of business expansions and new jobs were announced between July 1 and September 30, 2020 in Raleigh.
Hitachi-ABB Power Grids
The joint venture between Hitachi and ABB’s Power Grids has expanded its headquarters at NC State’s Centennial Campus and added 150 jobs. In an interview with Triangle Business Journal, Yoann Barbosa, interim site lead and country finance director for Power Grids, said the new Hitachi ABB Power Grids business is already investing in Raleigh, where it also houses its power grids research and development center. Power Grids has expanded to the second floor of its current building on Centennial Campus to create a 3,000 square foot “customer experience center.” The 3,000-square-foot center is expected to be complete this fall and will host demos for customers. Right now, Power Grids has 450 Raleigh employees, including most of the 150 new positions the company created for the new venture. ABB (NYSE: ABB) continues to have its North American headquarters in Cary.
At the end of August, Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille, a popular Texas-based steakhouse, opened its first North Carolina location in Raleigh. A Place at the Table
Although the civil unrest had devastating effects on A Place at the Table, Maggie Kane and her team bounced back. They now have carry-out and curbside service while continuing their model of a pay-what you-can-restaurant. The remodel allows for the restaurant to offer a bigger menu, more outdoor seating and a larger indoor dining space when it is safe to reopen. On Sept. 26 the restaurant announced a temporary closure to reassess its operations to provide food to all community members safely.
NC DHHS Headquarters
The state Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is planning for a new headquarters in the Blue Ridge Corridor of Raleigh. DHHS is currently located in Dorthea Dix Park and they plan to consolidate their offices and have most of the 4,000 employees in the new headquarters.
