The Raleigh Fire Department recently began its 45th Fire Academy in compliance with COVID-19-related restrictions. The intense and specialized six-month training program takes place at the department’s Keeter Training Center and the 45th academy includes 30 recruits.
The students and staff wear face coverings, follow social distancing guidelines and take other precautions. To maintain appropriate staffing, the department must train new firefighters – and it’s committed to doing so safely.
“The first step is to have a documented safety plan in place and ensure all of us are aware of it and follow it,” says Keith Wilder, battalion chief and RFD safety officer. “Secondly, we follow all the appropriate safety and hygiene practices, and adhere to the related laws, executive orders, local ordinances and proclamations.”
Graduation day for the 45th academy is projected for mid-January 2021.
