City Adopts Name "Gipson Play Plaza at Dix Park"

In recognition of generous gift from Pat and Tom Gipson

The Raleigh City Council approved a proposal to name the Play Plaza project at Dorothea Dix Park the “Gipson Play Plaza" following a public hearing at its Dec. 7 meeting. The naming recognizes a gift of $10,000,000 towards the Plaza Play project, gifted by Pat and Tom Gipson to the Dix Park Conservancy for the benefit of the Play Plaza project.

The Play Plaza consists of a 18.5 +/- acre area located within Dorothea Dix Park, adjacent to Lake Wheeler Road between Goode Street and Umstead Drive.  The proposed name will be applied to the Play Plaza for a period of thirty (30) years following execution of a written agreement committing the funds to the project.
The public hearing was held during the evening City Council session, starting at 7 p.m. and members of the public were invited to sign up to speak. This hearing was set pursuant to the provisions of City Council Resolution 2021-278.
