About the Project
Hidden Rock #1 is a site-specific sculpture installation located at the Visitor’s Center in Annie Louise Wilkerson, MD Nature Preserve Park. The work invites park visitors to connect to and learn about the site through the imagery and forms realized in the sculpture. A core focus of Scott’s work is to create a space or ‘window’ for people to gain enhanced understandings of the landscape around them, and to help people to see themselves as part of that landscape. Hidden Rock #1 is a sculpted steel ‘boulder’ nestled in a planting area to enhance a sense of discovery. Modeled on a large rock found at the Hidden Rocks outcropping in the park, it consists of 7 weathered steel panels which have been laser-cut to form various outlines of the rock. Each panel is printed with a photograph of a view of landscape and sky found in a meadow area at the park. The repeated image of native grass, tree-line, and sky combined with the form of the boulder conjure themes such as human connections to the land and nature, geology, Piedmont prairies, mindfulness, and the near and distant histories of the North Carolina landscape.
About the Artist
Scott Hazard is a visual artist and landscape architect based in Raleigh, North Carolina. His works are a meditation on land and the cultural lenses through which we experience our environment. His work incorporates elements of natural and built landscapes as points of origin to foster a lyrical sense of place and to reveal natural and cultural narratives found in the landscape. The objects he makes serve as devices for poetic awareness. His mixed-media works, sculptures, and landscapes work to create spaces and moments for reflection and a brief sense of departure. He has exhibited his work at venues including CAM (Contemporary Art Museum) Raleigh; SECCA (Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art), Winston-Salem; Mixed Greens, New York, NY; CONTEXT, Miami, FL; Second Street Gallery, Charlottesville, VA; Adah Rose Gallery, Kensington, MD; Davidson College, Davidson, NC; Roanoke College, Salem, VA; Goucher College, Towson, MD; and Atlantic Center for the Arts, Atlantic Beach, FL. His work has been featured in numerous magazines and online publications, including The Washington Post, Glamcult, WILD Magazine, Oxford American, Monster Children, BOOOOOOOM, Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose, and Colossal. He is the recipient of an Artist Fellowship from the North Carolina Arts Council and a Professional Development Grant from the United Arts Council.
