Special Olympics is a non-profit organization founded to provide no cost sports training and competition to athletes of all skill levels with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics offers athletes the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other athletes, and the community. Special Olympics Wake County (SOWC) is an accredited part of Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) and is sponsored by Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources, and Specialized Recreation and Inclusion Services. SOWC provides training for athletes in up to 18 different seasonal sports for local, and state level competitions. SOWC holds two large sets of local competitions in conjunction with the Wake County Public School System.
