Join Pullen Arts Center on October 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a special spooky and creative day where you can try out short Halloween-themed workshops in our newly renovated studios. There will also be an assortment of free activities not requiring registration.

Explore and register for the workshops below. Spaces are limited in each class and pre-registration is required. All materials are provided and the cost per class is $5.

Adult Workshops

Pop-Up Halloween Cards

Instructor: Kathy Steinsberger
Ages: 16+ years

Register for a Time Slot:

Learn how to make pop-up cards with local artist and bookmaker Kathy Steinsberger. Kathy will teach you to cut and assemble a haunted house that pops up from the paper as you open your card. Keep it for yourself or mail it to your favorite ghost or goblin. All supplies provided.

    Stamping Copper Pumpkins - Jewelry

    Learn how to use stamps to create impressions of symbols and text on copper with metalsmith Caitlin Lewis. Caitlin will teach you to use stamps and hammers to personalize a small copper pumpkin pin. Keep it for yourself or give someone a treat for Halloween. All supplies provided.

    Clay Jack-o-Lanterns - Pottery

    Curious about clay? Love carving jack-o-lanterns? Teaching Artist Caroline Radcliff will show you what’s possible when clay reaches the leather hard stage. Each student will receive a clay pumpkin shape that was thrown on the wheel earlier in the week and will learn how to manipulate clay at this stage. Whether you create a traditional jack-o-lantern or an abstract luminary, you will learn a little more about working with clay beyond the wheel. All supplies provided. Students should expect to pick up jack-o-lanterns approximately 2 weeks after the program to allow for time for works to be fired in the kiln. 

    Clay Alebrijes - Pottery

    Location: Pottery - Handbuilding Classroom

    Alebrijes are colorful creatures or spirit guides that are popular in Mexican folk art. While you are creating your alebrijes, you will learn a little more about what you can do in Handbuilt Pottery classes. All materials provided. Students should plan to pick up alebrijes 2 weeks after the class to allow time for pieces to go through the kiln.

    Soldering Miniature Pumpkin Stands - Jewelry

    Try your hand at an essential metalworking skill - soldering! Teaching Artist Brittany Clark will teach you to solder copper wire “legs” onto a small ring, creating a small spider stand that can hold your miniature pumpkin. All supplies provided. No previous experience needed. Participants with long hair must tie hair back for this workshop. 

    Make a Bone Shaped Ring - Jewelry

    Join Teaching Artist Brittany Clark for an introduction to sawing and forming in this Halloween themed workshop. Participants will cut out a fun long Halloween shape - like a cartoon bone -  and form it on a ring mandrel to make a small ring. All supplies provided. No previous experience required.

    Creepy Crawlies in Clay

    Instructor: Julia Einstein
    Ages: 6-10 years

    In this workshop students will be introduced to the youth pottery studio and equipment, learning how to create a small slab using a slab roller, add impressions and texture to clay and make colorful creations using underglazes and staining. Students will make a creepy crawly clay pendant. All supplies provided. 

    Drawing Monsters Inspired by Basquiat

    Instructor: Pamela Cola
    Ages: 6-10 years
    Course Fee: $5
    Location: Painting Studio

    This drawing workshop is inspired by the work of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and the monsters he often included in his artwork. Students will learn to draw Basquiat inspired monsters using pastels and crayons. All supplies provided. This class is intended for children only; parents/guardians are not expected to attend, but should plan to meet their child in the studio at the end of the workshop.

    Family Workshops
