The Chief's Replies
As fire chief, what is your No. 1 priority for enhancing the Raleigh Fire Department and the residents it serves?
In 2020 when I was selected as the fire chief for the City of Raleigh, I shared my fundamental fire service principles:
- Education and training
- Health and safety
- Effective communication
- Superior customer service
Without a doubt, health and safety is my No. 1 priority for the Raleigh Fire Department and the residents we serve. The Covid-19 pandemic has showed us the importance of having a healthy workforce as we continue to provide superior emergency service throughout these unprecedented times.
Some exposure to risk is the nature of our job, but there are several things we can do to limit it. Maintaining good fitness cuts down on back, neck and shoulder injuries. Conducting comprehensive health screenings and understanding our genetic predispositions can help us address problems before they occur. Cleaning our personal protective ensemble (PPE); using wet wipes and gross decontamination; and taking hot showers as soon as possible after fires can reduce our cancer risk.
As the leader, I’m dedicated to constantly seeking opportunities to advance our organization by introducing innovation, technology, continued learning and training. These efforts help us improve on our ability to deliver the most comprehensive level of service possible to our community.
