Explore The Outdoors With These Upcoming Nature Programs


   

Critter Club
Do you like exploring nature and learning about exciting animals?  Join the critter club to discover something new, make crafts, play games, and take nature hikes!  The club meets every Thursday at 6 p.m.  This program is open to participants ages 6-12 and the fee is $10.  This program will be held at Lake Lynn Community Center on March 11th, 18th, and 25th.
 
Junior Gardeners
Come decorate a flower pot, plant a seed and take it home to watch it grow.  We'll learn how to care for your seed and about the parts of a plant.  This program is open to participants ages 6-12 and the fee is $5.  This program will be held at Green Road Community Center on Wednesday, March 17th, from 6:15-7:15 p.m.  Pre-registration is required four days in advance.
 
Animal Show and Tell
Meet some animals up close.  Possible visitors include: snakes, lizards and insects.  Learn about these animals and the ones living in this park.  This program is open to participants ages 5-12 and the fee is $5.  This program will be held at Chavis Community Center on Saturday, March 13th, from 1 - 2 p.m.  Pre-registration is required four days in advance.
 
More Mammal Mania
Come explore the world of mammals. We will talk about the different mammals that live in the park and go on a hike in search of them. A "furry" craft is included.  Parent must attend with child.  Program will be Saturday, March 13th, from 10 - 11 a.m.  The program is for ages 3 - 5 years old and the fee is $5 per person.  Pre-registration is required four days prior to the event. Bug Adventure

Search for insects of all kinds at the park.  We will look under logs, in the soil, and among trees for these fascinating little critters.  This program is open to participants ages 3-5 and the fee is $3.  This program will be held at Anderson Point Park on Tuesday, March 16th, from 9:30 - 10:15 a.m.  Pre-registration is required four days in advance.
 
A Family Walk in the Park
Bring the whole family for a leisurely walk to explore the park after a long day of work (or school). We'll figure out what's going on in the park and we'll share it with you. It could be wildflowers, or owls, or just a walk to celebrate spring!  Walks will be held Tuesday, March 16th from 6 - 7 p.m. and Thursday, April 22nd, from 6 - 7 p.m.  The walk is for all ages and the fee is $1 per person. Pre-registration is required four days prior to the event. Please meet outside the Park Office at the North entrance to the park off of Durant Rd.  For more information, please contact Durant Nature Park, (919) 870-2871.
 
Service to the Park
Join the Durant staff for a meaningful service project such as mulching the butterfly garden, maintaining trails, or splashing a fresh coat of pain where needed.   Service to the park event will be held Saturday, March 20th from 10 a.m. - noon.  This event is free and for ages 10 and up.  Please meet outside the park office at the North entrance to the park off of Durant Rd.  For more information, please contact Durant Nature Park, (919) 870-2871. Living Log
Did you know that lots of critters call an old log home?  From insects to worms to turtles and fungi, we will discover all of these inhabitants of the living log.  This program is open to participants ages 6-12 and the fee is $3.  This program will be held at Anderson Point Park on Saturday, March 20th, from 1 - 2 p.m.  Pre-registration is required four days in advance.
 
How to Attract Birds to Your Backyard
Have you ever wondered what to plant to attract hummingbirds and other bird friends?  What type of seed attracts what birds?  How to outwit squirrels?  Join us for a short talk on just these subjects and then a nice spring walk through the park to visit the resident birds.  Bring your binoculars!  This program is open to participants of all ages and is free of charge.  This program will be held at Anderson Point Park on Saturday, March 20th, from 9 - 11 a.m.  Pre-registration is required four days in advance.
 
Spring Has Sprung - Hike
Explore the park on the first day of spring to discover what plants and animals are waking up from their winter nap.  We will go on a hike to observe the renewed life in the park.  Fee applies to each participant.  All children under 10 must be accompanied by a paying adult.  This program is open to participants of all ages and the fee is $2.  This program will be held at Anderson Point Park on Saturday, March 20th, from 10 - 10:45 a.m.  Pre-registration is required four days in advance.
 

Turtles For Tots
Turtles are terrific!  Learn about these interesting reptiles including where they live, what they eat and how the protect themselves.  We will read a story and take a walk to look for turtles.  This program is open to participants ages 3-5 and the fee is $3.  This program will be held at Laurel Hills Community Center on Tuesday, March 23rd, from 10:15 - 11 a.m.  Pre-registration is required four days in advance.

 

Park Art - Fish
In this whimsical program you'll not only learn about fish in Durant's pond but get a chance to paint one.   This program will be Tuesday, March 23rd from 6 - 7 p.m.  Program is for ages 6 - 10 and the fee is $5 per person. Please meet outside the park office at the North entrance to the park off of Durant Rd, it will involve a hike to the pond.  Pre-registration is required four days prior to the event.  For more information, please contact Durant Nature Park, (919) 870-2871.
 
Fish Frenzy
Come enjoy this program to find out more about fish!  We will talk about what fish need to survive and make a craft to take home.  This program is open to participants ages 6-12 and the fee is $5.  This program will be held at Method Road Community Center on Tuesday, March 23rd, from 5:30-6:30 p.m.  Pre-registration is required four days in advance.
 
Critter and Craft: Bunnies
Join us as we combine art and nature to learn about bunnies and their characteristics. We'll learn about bunny habits and make a craft to take home.  This program is open to participants ages 6-12 and the fee is $5.  This program will be held at Jaycee Community Center on Thursday, March 25th, from 5-6 p.m.  Pre-registration is required four days in advance.

 

Little Nature Hikers
Join a nature instructor and other families for a guided walk around the park with your child.  Meet other families in your community and learn about nature.  We'll see birds, insects and maybe even a few mammals and reptiles basking near the lakes and ponds.  Strollers are welcome.  This program is open to participants ages 1-6 and the fee is $2.  This program will be held at Lake Wheeler on Tuesday April 6th from 9:30-10:15 a.m.  Pre-registration is required four days in advance. 

 

Animal Show and Tell

Join us as we combine art and nature to learn about ladybugs and their characteristics.  We'll take a walk to look for ladybugs and make a craft to take home.  This program is open to participants ages 6-12 and the fee is $5.  This program will be held at Sertoma Arts Center on Saturday, April 10th, from 10:30-11:30 a.m.  Pre-registration is required four days in advance. 

 

Living Log

Join us for a spring walk while we discuss raptors (hawks, falcons, owls), how to identify them, and their different hunting strategies.  Hopefully, we'll see some resident raptors along with other exciting birds!  Bring your binoculars!  This program is open to participants of all ages and is free of charge.  This program will be held at Anderson Point Park on Saturday, April 10th, from 9-11 a.m.  Pre-registration is required four days in advance.
