How to Become a Community Producer

Raleigh Television Network offers Raleigh residents complete professional training in all areas of studio and field production, including graphics, lighting, audio, teleprompter and editing.  Television production workshops are taught by RTN staff and other industry professionals who are qualified to teach proper production techniques and procedures.  The workshops are designed to instruct and fully prepare each student to use the digital television studio, field production equipment, the ingress/egress workstations and the non-linear editing systems with confidence and skill, enabling them to create and produce their own television programs.

GETTING STARTED:

Orientation: The orientation workshop is required and is the first step in becoming a certified community access producer, production volunteer or a content provider. RTN holds three orientations a year--winter (December); fall (September) and spring (March). The orientation is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is on a first come first serve non-discriminatory basis and you may register by calling (919) 996-6278. You must download and complete the RTN Access Information form  (.doc) or RTN Access Information form  (pdf) and a copy of the policies and procedures and bring with you on the day of the orientation. You may also fax a copy of the Access Information form to our office at (919) 831-6877. RTN reserves the right to cancel and/or reschedule orientation and workshops for another time.

RTN's production equipment and facilities are available for individuals who complete the required training for becoming certified to produce and/or submit video content. In the orientation workshop, potential community producers, production volunteers and content providers are given an overview of the policies and procedures, the technical requirements, equipment resources and are invited to tour the facility located at 310 W. Martin Street.

TV Production Workshop:

The TV Production Workshop is the second step that is required for producing a public access show. In this four-hour workshop, there is a comprehensive review of the policies and procedures which includes a test; exercises on show and crew development; production needs; forms and paperwork required; technical training offered and required; membership levels and fees; RTN's operation and a sampling of field production equipment provided.

Studio Productions:

Are you interested in a studio production? You will need to assemble a team of five individuals. You and five individuals associated with your group or church organization must attend orientation and the television production workshop before for proceeding to take the other production workshops offered. A crew of five (5) certified access users is required to assist with studio productions and they are also required to attend the orientation if they plan to enroll in the production workshops with you as part of your production team.

Have content ready to air? If you have produced at least three videos, you may submit them. You will need to attend orientation and submit an application and ingest training form to request a play out schedule (see the technical section in the Policies and Procedures). A minimum of three (3) episodes will be accepted provided that they meet the technical requirements.  Less than than three programs is not permitted. For more information, call (919) 996-6278.
