Block Gallery Exhibition Application

MBAE-Municipal Building Art Exhibit

ARTS COMMISSION ISSUES CALL FOR EXHIBITION SUBMISSIONS

The City of Raleigh Arts Commission is inviting artists and independent art curators who live or work in Wake County to submit applications for the Block Art Gallery Municipal Building Art Exhibition program for 2009-2010.  For complete guideline information and to download an application form, click here or call the Arts Commission at 890-3610. All applications must be received by June 30 at 4 p.m.

Connecting local artists to the community through ongoing exhibitions and public outreach since 1984, the Block Art Gallery is located on the first and second floors of the Avery C. Upchurch Government Complex, located at 222 W. Hargett St. Managed by the Raleigh Arts Commission, the gallery was dedicated in 2006 to honor former City Council Member and community leader Miriam Preston Block.

Featuring 2,296 square feet of marble walls illuminated by custom lighting, the art gallery’s first and second floors are suitable for two-dimensional artworks. Additionally, three-dimensional smaller sculptural works can be exhibited in the two secured glass cases on the second floor. Video or other new media can be exhibited through projection and temporary multi-media installations.

Exhibiting artists must be at least 18 years old, live and/or work in Wake County for at least one year, and have participated in two juried or invitational shows in the past five years.  Undergraduate students and artists who have exhibited in the Block Art Gallery since September 2006 may not apply.

Independent curators must also be at least 18 years old, and live and/or work in Wake County for at least one year. Commercial gallery owners are not eligible to apply as independent curators, although artists represented by a commercial gallery are eligible to apply individually.

Applications will be reviewed by a committee comprised of visual art professionals, members of the Arts Commission and City staff.  Each exhibition is typically four to six weeks and will be scheduled from January 2009 through November 2010.  Artists will receive a small honorarium. Additionally, all sales inquiries will be directed to the artist.

Established in 1977, the City of Raleigh Arts Commission holds the distinction of being the first municipal arts commission created in North Carolina. The Arts Commission serves as the Raleigh City Council’s official advisory and advocacy body for the arts. The commission’s myriad activities foster, support, and promote the arts in the Capital City.
