What is a Municipal Service District?

You may have heard the term “Municipal Service District” or the abbreviation “MSD” in the news or at City Council meetings recently. But what is an MSD exactly?

A Municipal Service District is any defined area in a city or county. The property owners pay an additional property tax to provide extra services for the area. This means certain areas in a city or county might pay a slightly higher property tax rate. In return, they have more services or projects available. These services are in addition to those provided to the entire city or county.

You might wonder why a municipality would need a Municipal Service District, how the process works, or what residents can expect.
